Is a specimen without a locality worth buying?
Sometimes, and the conditions are specific. A missing locality is permanent, so the question is whether you are buying something a locality does not affect.
Sometimes. A missing locality is a permanent defect that cannot be repaired, so the only question is what you are buying the specimen for. A display crystal survives it. A species determination often does not: the apophyllite group holds six species that only chemical analysis can separate, and the locality was the evidence.
In short
- A missing locality is permanent. It is the one defect in a specimen that cannot be repaired, reversed or researched back. Damage can be assessed, restoration can be disclosed, a species can be analysed. A lost locality is simply gone.
- The question is not whether it matters. It is what you are buying the specimen for. For a piece bought to look at, the locality changes nothing you will ever experience. For a reference collection, a locality suite or a species determination that rests on provenance, it is disqualifying.
- For some species the locality is part of the determination. Where two minerals can only be told apart by analysis, collectors routinely lean on the locality to decide, and a specimen with no locality removes the only evidence there was.
- A stated locality is not automatically better. The Handbook of Mineralogy closes its langite distribution list with a warning that applies widely: many older localities require modern confirmation. An unverified old label and no label are closer together than they look.
- If you buy one, record it honestly and permanently. Write “locality unknown” in the catalogue and never let a plausible guess migrate into the field over the years. That is how false localities enter the literature.

Why a lost locality cannot be recovered
Collectors are used to defects that can be worked on. A repaired specimen can be examined under ultraviolet light and the repair disclosed. A dirty specimen can sometimes be cleaned, carefully. A doubtful species determination can be settled by X-ray diffraction if the piece is worth the money.
A missing locality has no equivalent procedure. There is no test that recovers where a specimen came from. In rare cases a trace-element signature or a distinctive associated species narrows it — a particular gangue mineral, a characteristic matrix, an unusual habit known from one place — but that produces a hypothesis, not a locality, and an honest catalogue records it as a hypothesis for as long as it remains one.
So the defect compounds. Every future owner inherits it. A specimen that loses its locality in 1960 is still missing it now and will be missing it in 2090. That is what makes it different in kind from damage, which is at least bounded and describable.
The quotable version: everything else about a specimen can be established later. The locality is the only thing that can only be recorded at the time.

When the locality is part of the species determination
This is the case collectors most often overlook, and it turns a missing locality from a disappointment into a disqualification.
A great many mineral pairs cannot be separated without analysis, and in practice collectors and dealers resolve them by locality and habit instead. That is a legitimate and standard approach — stated honestly — but it means the locality is carrying the determination.
Apophyllite: the Handbook of Mineralogy states plainly that distinguishing fluorapophyllite from hydroxyapophyllite requires chemical analysis. A green Indian specimen is presumed fluorapophyllite-(K) because it is Indian. Remove the locality and the presumption has nothing to stand on.
Langite: dimorphous with wroewolfeite, identical in composition, separable only by X-ray or Raman. A locality where langite has been confirmed analytically supports the label; no locality supports nothing.

The test to apply before buying: ask whether you could determine the species from the specimen alone. If the answer is no, and there is no locality, then you are buying a mineral you cannot name, and the label on it is decoration.
A stated locality is not the same as a verified one
It is worth being even-handed about this, because the argument above can slide into treating any written locality as sufficient.
The Handbook of Mineralogy ends its distribution list for langite with a sentence that deserves to be better known: Many older localities require modern confirmation. That is a mineralogical reference work saying, of a well-studied species, that historical locality records should not be taken at face value.
Three ways a stated locality goes wrong. Attribution drift: a specimen from “a Cornish mine” becomes “Wheal Gorland” over three owners, because the famous name is the one people remember. Batch contamination: a dealer's flat of material from one locality acquires a piece from another, and both go out with the same label. Optimistic upgrading: a general locality becomes a specific one because a specific one is more interesting.
So the comparison is not between “locality” and “no locality”. It is between evidence and assertion. An old, handwritten, unverified label attributing a specimen to a famous mine may carry less real information than an honest “locality not recorded” from a dealer who declines to guess. The first invites a false entry in your catalogue; the second does not.
The questions to ask a seller are the same ones on what to look for when buying minerals online: where did it come from, what does the previous label say, and do you know or are you inferring? A dealer who says “I do not know” is giving you better information than one who does not.
If you buy one, how to record it so it stays honest
Unlabelled material does enter good collections, legitimately, and the way it is recorded decides whether it stays harmless.
Write “locality unknown”, not a blank. A blank field looks like an oversight and invites a future owner to fill it in. An explicit “locality unknown” is a statement, and statements survive.
If you have a hypothesis, record it as one, in the notes, with the reason. “Matrix and associated baryte suggest a Northern Pennine origin — unverified, my inference, 2026” is a useful record. “Weardale” in the locality field is a fabrication, and in forty years nobody will be able to tell the two apart unless you made the distinction now. This is exactly what the three-state convention on labelling and cataloguing is for.
Keep it physically separate from the provenanced material if you keep a locality collection. Not because it is inferior, but because a drawer where the documented and the undocumented are mixed is a drawer where, eventually, someone assumes.
Do not let it into a study or reference suite at all. A specimen without provenance cannot support a conclusion about a locality, and material that will be photographed, published or donated needs its provenance intact.
What it is worth paying: less, and considerably less for anything other than a display piece.
