Toxic minerals in a collection

Lead, arsenic, mercury, asbestiform fibres and uranium — what is genuinely dangerous on a shelf, what is not, and the one rule that covers most of it.

Solid mineral specimens are safe to handle. The risk is dust, ingestion and, for a few species, radon. Galena, cerussite, vanadinite and the lead arsenates are hazardous only if you breathe or swallow particles. Cinnabar is mercury sulphide, hardness 2, and should never be cut, ground or heated. Wash your hands.

  • A specimen in a drawer is not a hazard. Nearly every real risk in a collection is dust — from sawing, grinding, dry brushing, or a specimen breaking down on its own.

The one rule that covers most of it

Almost everything written about toxic minerals online misstates the problem. The question is not whether a mineral contains a poisonous element — a great many do — but whether that element can get into you. Lead locked into a galena crystal sitting on a shelf is not going anywhere. Lead in a fine dust you have just brushed off that crystal and breathed in is a different matter entirely.

So the rule is: do not create dust, and do not put your hands in your mouth. In practice that means no sawing, grinding, sanding, tumbling or dry brushing of anything containing lead, arsenic, mercury, antimony, thallium or uranium; no eating, drinking or smoking at the specimen desk; and washing your hands when you have finished handling. That is the whole of it for perhaps ninety-five per cent of a normal collection.

Gloves are usually unnecessary and can be counterproductive, because they encourage handling specimens you would otherwise treat carefully. Reserve them for friable, powdery or fibrous material, and for anything you are repackaging.

Lead: the biggest group in any collection

Lead secondaries are the backbone of classic mineral collecting, which means most collections are full of them. Galena is lead sulphide. Cerussite is lead carbonate. Pyromorphite, mimetite and vanadinite are the lead phosphate, arsenate and vanadate of the apatite supergroup. Wulfenite is lead molybdate, anglesite the sulphate, crocoite the chromate. Every one of them is safe as a solid object and hazardous as a powder.

Two things make lead specimens produce dust. The first is you: cutting, trimming, brushing dry. The second is the specimen itself. Cerussite and anglesite are brittle and chip readily, and a badly stored plate of small crystals will shed. If you find loose grit at the bottom of a box, damp-wipe the box rather than blowing it out.

Practical handling: hold specimens by the matrix, keep them out of kitchens and off dining tables, keep them away from small children who put things in their mouths, and wash your hands. Do not display lead minerals where food is prepared. None of this requires a laboratory.

Arsenic, and why realgar is a special case

Arsenates and arsenides are everywhere in a good collection: erythrite, scorodite, adamite, conichalcite, olivenite, clinoclase, liroconite, mimetite, skutterudite, arsenopyrite. As solids they follow exactly the same rule as the lead minerals — do not make dust, do not ingest.

Realgar and orpiment are the exception, and the exception is about light rather than handling. Realgar, arsenic sulphide, is unstable in light: prolonged exposure breaks it down to pararealgar, and a specimen slowly disintegrates into an orange-yellow powder. That powder is a friable arsenic sulphide, which is precisely the form you do not want. A realgar left on a sunny windowsill for a few years does not just lose its value; it converts itself into the hazardous version of itself.

Keep realgar and orpiment in a closed dark box or a drawer, take them out to look at them, and put them back. If a specimen has already started to powder, seal it in a rigid closed container and stop handling it loose. Arsenopyrite and other arsenic sulphides can also oxidise in humid conditions, so a dry cupboard is doing more work than it looks.

Mercury and the asbestiform species

Cinnabar is mercury sulphide and is the most toxic mineral in general circulation among collectors. As a solid crystal on matrix it is stable and safe to hold. What you must never do is heat it, saw it, grind it or polish it: heating drives off mercury vapour, and mercury is a neurotoxin that is absorbed through the lungs. Cinnabar has no place near a lapidary saw or a heat gun. Wash your hands after handling; store it in its own box.

The asbestiform minerals are the other group deserving genuine restriction, and they are a different kind of risk because it is mechanical rather than chemical. Crocidolite, chrysotile, erionite and the fibrous habits of actinolite and tremolite release respirable fibres, and there is no safe way to brush, trim or repackage them casually. Keep such specimens permanently sealed in a rigid closed container — a display box that is never opened — and do not accept a loose, shedding piece into a collection at all.

Note that this is about habit, not species name. Massive actinolite is not a problem; the same species as fine parallel fibres is. Tiger's eye and other pseudomorphs after crocidolite are silicified and are not treated as a fibre hazard.

Radioactive species and radon

Uranium minerals — autunite, torbernite, uraninite, carnotite, uranophane — and thorium minerals such as thorite are radioactive, and collectors do keep them. The external radiation from a small specimen is low. The issue that actually matters in a house is radon: uranium decays through radon gas, and radon accumulates in enclosed spaces.

So the rule for radioactive species is the inverse of the rule for realgar. Do not seal them airtight in a cupboard in a room you sleep in. Store them somewhere ventilated, ideally not in a bedroom or a small closed study, keep the number of specimens proportionate, and do not handle them for long periods. Never grind, cut or lick them, and be aware that some uranium secondaries are water-soluble and will powder.

If you want one uranium specimen for the fluorescence, a small autunite in a ventilated cabinet is a reasonable thing to own. A drawer full of uraninite in a bedroom is not.

A practical routine

What a sensible collection actually does, in full: hold specimens by the matrix; never eat or drink at the specimen bench; never dry-brush anything; wash hands afterwards; damp-wipe shelves rather than dusting them dry; keep realgar, orpiment and proustite in the dark; keep fibrous material permanently sealed; keep radioactive material ventilated; and give friable or shedding pieces their own closed box.

Then label the hazardous ones. This is the part collectors skip and the part that matters most, because a collection outlives the person who understood it. A card that says "lead arsenate — do not cut or grind" costs nothing and tells the next owner, or the family clearing the house, what they are holding. Finally, keep the risk in proportion. Cleaning a specimen aggressively destroys far more collections than toxicity ever harms collectors, and the two problems have the same solution: leave it alone.

Questions

Is it safe to keep galena in the house?
Yes. Galena is lead sulphide and is chemically stable; a specimen on a shelf poses no hazard. What you must not do is cut, grind, sand or dry-brush it, or let small children handle it unsupervised. Hold it by the matrix, keep it away from food preparation, and wash your hands afterwards.
Do I need gloves to handle mineral specimens?
For most specimens, no — handwashing does the job, and gloves reduce your grip and your care. Wear them for friable or powdering material, for anything fibrous or asbestiform, for repackaging a dusty old collection, and if you have cuts on your hands. The routine that matters is not creating dust in the first place.
Is malachite toxic to touch?
No. Solid malachite is a stable copper carbonate and handling it is harmless. The persistent claim otherwise comes from lapidary practice, where grinding and polishing malachite produces copper-bearing dust that should not be inhaled. If you are not cutting it, ordinary handwashing is sufficient.
Should I worry about radioactivity from ordinary specimens?
No. Some fluorite, zircon, monazite and granite contain trace uranium or thorium at levels that are not a meaningful exposure. The species that matter are the uranium and thorium minerals themselves — autunite, torbernite, uraninite, thorite — and they are collected deliberately rather than encountered by accident. Store those ventilated because of radon rather than direct radiation.
My realgar is turning to orange powder. What do I do?
It has begun converting to pararealgar in light, and the process is not reversible. Put it in a rigid, closed, opaque container and stop handling it loose, because the powder is a friable arsenic sulphide. Keep any remaining realgar and orpiment permanently in the dark, and treat sunny display shelves as unsuitable for them.
