How to pack and ship mineral specimens

Wrap the specimen so at least 25 mm of soft padding surrounds every face, box it, then put that box inside a second box with a further 50 mm of crushable fill. Cleavage rather than hardness decides what breaks: a fluorite thumbnail needs more care than a massive quartz of the same size.

In short

  • Movement is the whole problem. Couriers drop parcels, and a well-packed mineral specimen survives that. What does not survive is a crystal with room to accelerate inside the box before it hits something, or a matrix left resting on one unsupported corner.
  • Double-box anything you would be upset to lose. A single box transmits an impact straight to the contents. Two boxes with a compressible gap between them convert the impact into crushing of the packaging.
  • The padding must be able to compress. Packed rock-solid, it transmits shock exactly like the box does. Packed loose, it settles in transit and leaves a void. Firm, and springy, is the target.
  • Cotton wool is the classic mistake. Its fibres hook onto acicular, hair-like and delicate crystals and cannot be removed without breaking them. Acid-free tissue first, every time.
  • Send the label separately inside its own envelope, and photograph the specimen before it is wrapped. Both cost nothing and both matter if a claim follows.

The sequence, first action to finish state

Work in this order. It takes about ten minutes a specimen once you have done it a few times.

  1. Photograph it, unwrapped, on a plain background, with a scale. This is the first action and it is the one everybody skips. Without it, a damage claim is your word against a courier's.
  2. Take the label out and put it in its own small envelope. Paper crushes, and a label pressed against a specimen for four days in transit can abrade or stain.
  3. Tissue over the crystals first. Acid-free tissue, tented rather than pressed, so that the first layer touching the mineral is the softest thing in the parcel. Never bubble wrap directly against a delicate termination: the film is stiff enough to lever a crystal off.
  4. Build outward in increasing firmness. Tissue, then foam or bubble, then more bubble. The rule is that hardness increases with distance from the specimen, never the other way round.
  5. Inner box. Choose one that leaves at least 25 mm of packing on every face for a thumbnail or miniature, and 50 mm for a cabinet piece. Fill the residual space so the wrapped specimen cannot shift. Tape it shut and write the species on it.
  6. Outer box, at least 50 mm larger on every side. Fill the gap with something that crushes — loose-fill, crumpled paper, foam peanuts. This layer is not there to hold anything in place; it is there to be destroyed instead of the specimen.
  7. Test the finish state. Seal it, pick it up, shake it hard, turn it over and shake it again. If you can hear or feel anything move inside, open it and repack. If it is silent, it is done.

Why the gap has to compress

This is the part that is most often got wrong by people being careful. The instinct when packing something precious is to pack it tight — to fill every void until the specimen cannot move at all. That instinct produces a parcel that behaves like a solid block: when the corner hits a concrete floor, the deceleration travels through the packing to the specimen almost undiminished.

What you actually want is packing that fails under impact. Crumpled paper, loose fill and foam peanuts absorb energy by collapsing, and the distance over which they collapse is the distance over which the specimen decelerates. More collapse distance means lower peak force. That is why a 50 mm outer gap is worth more than the same volume of material packed into a 25 mm gap at twice the density.

The opposite error is equally common: packing so loosely that vibration settles the fill during a two-day journey and opens a void at the top of the box. The target is firm and springy — you should be able to press the outer box wall inward a few millimetres with a thumb and feel it push back.

Weight changes the arithmetic. A 3 kg cabinet specimen carries far more energy than a 30 g thumbnail, so heavy pieces need both more gap and stronger board. Two heavy specimens should never travel in the same inner box: they are each other's worst hazard.

Materials that damage specimens in transit

  • Cotton wool. The single worst choice, and still the most common. Its fibres catch on acicular crystals, hair-like species and fine terminations, and removing them takes the crystal with them. The same objection applies to loose wadding and to anything with a nap.
  • Newsprint against the mineral. Fine as bulk fill in the outer box, poor as a first layer — the ink transfers, particularly onto porous or chalky material, and onto anything damp.
  • Bubble wrap directly on crystals. The film is stiffer than it feels, and taping it tightly around a spray of crystals levers them.
  • Adhesive tape touching the specimen. It will lift surface material when it comes off. Tape the wrapping to itself, never to the mineral.
  • Sealing damp. A specimen washed the night before and sealed in polythene is a specimen in a humidity chamber. For a sulphide, that is how pyrite decay starts. Dry it fully, and put silica gel in with anything reactive.
  • Heat and light in transit. A parcel spends hours in vehicles that get hot. That matters for realgar, vivianite and the other species covered under minerals that fade in light, and it is a reason to use an opaque inner box and to avoid shipping them in high summer if there is a choice.

Receiving, claims and what to do at the door

Open parcels over a tray or a towel, never over a hard floor and never over a sink. Unwrap by cutting the wrapping away from the specimen rather than pulling the specimen out of it. If something has broken, stop: photograph the parcel before you go any further, keep every fragment including the dust in the bottom of the box, and keep the packaging, because a courier claim will ask about it. Then acclimatise it. A specimen that has been in a cold van for two days will condense moisture on its surface the moment it comes into a warm room. Leave it in its opened box for a few hours before it goes into the cabinet, particularly if it is a sulphide.

All of this is well within any collector's ability, and the materials cost very little — tissue, bubble, boxes and a bag of loose fill will pack a great many specimens. The cost that is easy to underestimate is time and judgement at scale: packing one piece is ten minutes, packing a collection for a house move is a fortnight, and the decisions about which pieces cannot safely travel at all are the ones that need experience rather than materials. How much padding does a mineral specimen need?

Should I use cotton wool to pack crystals?

Use acid-free tissue as the layer touching the mineral, and keep cotton wool for polished and massive material if you use it at all.
Is double-boxing really necessary?
For anything crystallised, yes. The gap does the work, so it must be able to collapse.
How do I ship a very fragile spray of crystals?
Suspend it. Support the specimen only under its matrix, on cut foam, inside a rigid inner box, with nothing at all touching the crystals and free space above them. Then double or triple box. This class — millerite, boulangerite, fine zeolite sprays — is where most transit damage happens, and it cannot be solved by adding more wrapping.
What should I do if a specimen arrives broken?
Photograph the parcel, the packing and the specimen before touching anything, and keep every fragment including the dust. Retain the packaging, since claims routinely turn on whether it was adequate. Then contact the sender before the courier. Many clean breaks are repairable, and a repair you carry out and record on the label is disclosed rather than hidden.
