Is my rock worth anything?

Usually not, and that is not a brush-off. What separates a specimen with value from a heavy stone, and how to check yours in ten minutes.

Most rocks found in a garden, a field or on a beach have no specimen value: they are quartz, flint, ironstone or industrial slag. Value needs three things together — a scarce species, undamaged crystals, and a locality someone can name. Pyrite, at hardness 6, is mistaken for gold more often than any other mineral.

The three things that create value

A species that is scarce. Not scarce in your garden — scarce as specimens. Quartz is one of the most abundant minerals on earth and most of it is worth nothing at all, while a species that occurs at a handful of localities worldwide has value even in a thumbnail.

Crystals, sharp and undamaged. A mineral in massive form is usually a geological curiosity; the same mineral as sharp free-standing crystals on matrix is a specimen. Damage is decisive here, because it cannot be undone.

A locality someone can name. This is the one people find hardest to accept. An identical crystal is worth a great deal from a documented mine and very little from "somewhere near the coast", because the collector market runs on locality and a locality nobody can verify is not one.

All three must be present. Two out of three is a rock you like, which is a perfectly good reason to keep it.

The things that almost never have value

Beach and river pebbles, however striking. Tumbled and polished stones, which are a manufactured product. Roadstone and quarry aggregate. Industrial slag, which is common near any historic smelting site and is often mistaken for both meteorites and ore. Concretions, which form natural shapes that look convincingly like fossils, eggs and skulls.

Massive quartz deserves its own mention because it turns up more than everything else combined. White vein quartz is one of the commonest rocks in Britain, it is heavy, it looks like something, and it is worth nothing.

None of this makes a find uninteresting. A slag fragment tells you there was a smelter nearby, and that is real local history — it is just not a specimen with a market.

How to check yours in ten minutes

Run four tests. Streak: drag it across the unglazed base of a ceramic tile or mug and note the colour of the powder — this alone settles most gold and meteorite questions. Hardness: try a fingernail (about 2.5), then copper (about 3.5), then a steel blade (about 5.5), on a back edge. Magnet: strong attraction points to magnetite or to metallic iron. Heft: compare it in the hand against a similar-sized piece of ordinary rock — a genuinely heavy stone is telling you something about what is in it.

Then photograph it properly if you want an opinion: good diffuse light, several angles, a ruler or coin in frame for scale, and a close-up of any crystal faces. Say where it was found and what the ground there is like. Nine out of ten identification requests fail because there is no scale and no locality in the message.

Who will look at it for free

Local mineral clubs and geological societies are the best first stop, and members are usually pleased to be asked. University geology departments will often look at something genuinely unusual. Many museums run a public enquiry route, though response times vary considerably and they will not value anything.

Dealers will give you an opinion on identification, and will tell you what they would pay if it is something they handle — which is not the same as a valuation, and it is fair to know the difference. Independent valuation of mineral specimens is uncommon and normally sought for insurance or probate rather than curiosity.

Whatever route you take, do not remove a specimen from matrix, clean it aggressively or attempt to trim it before somebody has seen it. More potential value is destroyed by enthusiastic cleaning than by anything else an owner does.

When it genuinely is worth something

The case that regularly does turn out well is the inherited cabinet: a drawer of specimens with handwritten labels, often naming mines that closed generations ago. Old labels are provenance, and provenance is value. The labels themselves matter as much as the specimens and should never be discarded, rewritten or separated from the pieces they belong to.

The other case is a find from a known and documented location, particularly a classic locality that is no longer accessible. There the locality does the work, provided it can be substantiated.

If either describes what you have, get it looked at before anything is cleaned, sorted or sold.

Questions

How do I tell pyrite from gold?
Three quick tests. Pyrite is hardness 6–6.5 and brittle, so a pin shatters flakes off it; gold is 2.5–3 and malleable, so it dents and smears. Pyrite streaks greenish-black on porcelain, gold streaks gold. And gold is dramatically heavier for its size.
Is my rock a meteorite?
Almost certainly not. Meteorites are rare and the overwhelming majority of suspected finds are industrial slag, ironstone or magnetite. Slag is full of bubbles, which meteorites are not; magnetite is strongly magnetic and gives a black streak.
Where can I get a mineral valued?
Dealers will tell you what they would pay for material they handle, which is an offer rather than a valuation. Formal valuation of specimens is uncommon and is normally arranged for insurance or probate, based on seeing the piece in person.
Does a big crystal mean a valuable one?
No. Size only counts once species, condition and locality are equal. Some of the most sought-after British material — Caldbeck Fells campylite, Leadhills linarite — is small by nature, and a large piece is usually a different and worse specimen.
Should I clean it before showing it to anyone?
No. Rinse off loose soil with water at most. Wire brushes, acids and ultrasonic cleaners destroy crystal faces, patina and any chance of an accurate assessment, and the damage is permanent.
