What a fluorite specimen is worth

Locality, condition, crystal quality, colour and provenance — in roughly that order. Why nobody can price fluorite by the centimetre.

Fluorite value is set by locality first, then condition, crystal quality, colour and provenance. At hardness 4 with perfect cleavage in 4 directions, a fluorite specimen chips more easily than almost anything a collector handles, so damage costs more than size gains. A named Weardale mine on an old label can outweigh the crystal itself.

In short

  • Locality does most of the work. The same green crystal is a different proposition from Rogerley in Weardale than from an unnamed source.
  • Condition is second. Hardness 4 and perfect octahedral cleavage mean chipped corners are the norm — check every edge under a lens.
  • Crystal quality and colour outrank size. A sharp, gemmy 4 cm cube beats a bruised 12 cm plate.
  • Provenance adds real value — a dated old label naming a mine that no longer exists is not decoration.
  • There is no rate. Fluorite spans an enormous range on these factors alone, so treat any price quoted per centimetre as meaningless.

Why locality outranks everything else

Fluorite is one of the commonest minerals in a collection and one of the most widely distributed on earth. That abundance is exactly why the locality carries the value: what is scarce is not fluorite, it is fluorite from a particular working that produced a particular look for a limited time.

Weardale is the British case in point. Rogerley material is green and daylight-fluorescent, reading blue in sunlight, which is rare enough to be a locality signature rather than a curiosity. Boltsburn, worked into the 1930s, produced large lustrous crystals that have been circulating between cabinets ever since. Derbyshire runs to purple and amber and gives us Blue John, the banded ornamental variety from Castleton — which is not a crystal specimen at all and should not be priced as one.

The practical consequence: a specimen labelled only "fluorite, England" is worth materially less than the identical piece labelled with the mine, because the second can be checked and the first cannot.

Condition, and why cleavage is the whole story

Fluorite has perfect cleavage in four directions along octahedral planes. It parts under force that would not mark a quartz crystal, and it does so cleanly, leaving a flat bright triangular scar that is instantly recognisable once you have seen one.

Almost all fluorite damage happens after mining — in transport, in drawers, and when a specimen is levered out of a tight box. When you assess a piece, turn it under a light and look along every crystal edge for those flat scars. A single chip on a display corner takes a serious bite out of value; the same chip on the reverse usually does not.

Repair and reattachment are normal in the trade and acceptable when disclosed. Undisclosed repair is the thing to hunt for: check for glue lines under magnification, a colour or lustre mismatch across a join, and crystals that meet the matrix at an angle nothing else on the piece does.

Colour, zoning and fluorescence

Colour in fluorite comes from trace elements and defects in the crystal structure rather than from any essential component, which is why the species spans purple, green, amber, blue, pink and colourless — sometimes within one crystal as zoning or phantoms.

Two consequences for value. First, colour is not a locality guide: green fluorite is not automatically Weardale and purple is not automatically Derbyshire, so never let colour stand in for a label. Second, colour can be altered. Fluorite responds to heat and to irradiation, and treated material exists in the market. Where the colour is doing the heavy lifting on price, ask directly whether the piece has been treated.

Fluorescence is a genuine value factor where it is the locality's signature — Rogerley being the clearest case — and close to irrelevant where it is not. Plenty of fluorite does not fluoresce at all.

What a value cannot be based on

Weight, dimensions and a per-centimetre rate are the three things newcomers try to price fluorite with, and none of them work. Two 8 cm specimens from the same mine, the same pocket and the same week can be separated by an order of magnitude on crystal sharpness and one chipped corner.

Nor can it be based on a comparable found online in isolation. Asking prices are asking prices; they tell you what one seller hopes for on one day, not what a piece is worth. If you want a genuine sense of level, look at a lot of examples from the same named mine, in the same size, in comparable condition, and pay attention to what actually changes hands.

If you need a figure for insurance or probate rather than for curiosity, that is a valuation and it is a different exercise — one that depends on seeing the specimen.

Questions

Is a larger fluorite specimen worth more?
Only when locality, condition, crystal quality and colour are equal — which they rarely are. A sharp, undamaged 4 cm crystal from a named mine will usually outrank a bruised 12 cm plate from nowhere in particular.
Does fluorescence make fluorite more valuable?
Where it is the locality's signature, yes. Rogerley material in Weardale fluoresces strongly enough that daylight excites it, and that is part of what the name is bought for. Elsewhere it is a minor factor, and much fluorite does not fluoresce at all.
Why does the same colour of fluorite vary so much in price?
Because colour is the least of it. Locality and condition dominate, and colour in fluorite comes from trace defects that occur in many places, so it identifies nothing on its own.
Should I buy fluorite with no locality on the label?
Buy it if you like the piece for what it is, at a price that reflects an unverifiable label. Do not pay a locality premium for a locality nobody can confirm.
Can fluorite colour be treated?
Yes. Fluorite responds to heat and irradiation, and treated material circulates. Where the colour is the main thing you are paying for, ask the seller directly.
