Is it safe to collect on old mine dumps?
Ground hazards hurt collectors long before the chemistry does. Never enter a shaft or adit on an old orefield, and get permission before removing any mineral.
Surface collecting on spoil can be reasonably safe with permission and care. The ground is the hazard, not the minerals: concealed shafts and unstable spoil injure collectors, while the lead and arsenate dust on a metal mine dump is slow and cumulative. Never enter an adit. Damaging an SSSI is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
In short
- Rank the hazards correctly. Ground and structure hazards are immediate and can kill. Chemical hazards are slow, cumulative and largely controlled by not eating with dirty hands. Most written advice inverts this.
- Never enter an underground working. Not a short way in, not a level that looks solid, not with a torch and a friend. Old workings have bad air, unsupported ground and vertical drops in the floor, and none of those announce themselves.
- Assume every capping is failed until proved otherwise. Shafts are frequently covered with timber that has been rotting for a century, or with corrugated sheet under turf. A concealed shaft looks exactly like the ground around it.
- Access is not permission and permission is not consent to dig. Being able to walk somewhere says nothing about the right to remove material from it, and the two questions have different answers on the same site.
- Protected geological sites are a separate matter of law. Damaging the features for which a Site of Special Scientific Interest was designated is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

The ground is the hazard, not the chemistry
Advice about mine dumps tends to lead with arsenic, because arsenic is alarming and easy to write about. It has the priorities backwards, and getting them right changes what you actually do on site.
The chemical hazards are real, slow and controllable. Metal mine spoil in Cornwall, Devon, the Pennines and mid-Wales contains arsenic, lead, cadmium and other heavy metals at concentrations well above ordinary soil. The route into you is ingestion and inhalation of dust, not skin contact with rock. Gloves, not eating or smoking on site, washing hands and face before food, and changing out of contaminated clothing before getting into a car handle nearly all of it. That is a routine, and once it is a routine it stops being a decision.
The ground hazards are immediate and they are what actually injures people. Old orefields are perforated. Shafts were sunk by the hundred, capped with timber and covered over, and that timber has had a century to rot. Spoil tips are loose, steep, saturated after rain and prone to slide when undercut — which is exactly what digging into a tip face does. Adits flood, roofs fall, and floors have openings in them that are invisible under water.
The rule: on a mine dump, the thing that will hurt you today is underfoot, and the thing that might hurt you in thirty years is on your hands. Manage both, but do not confuse which is which.
The Health and Safety Executive's guidance on mining is written for the industry rather than for collectors, but it is the authoritative source on why abandoned workings are treated the way they are.
The rules that have no exceptions
Most field safety is judgement. These four are not, and they are worth stating flatly because the pressure to bend them always arrives at the moment they matter.
Do not enter an adit, shaft, level or any underground working. Not for a look, not just inside the portal, not because it is dry and timbered and someone else's photograph shows them doing it. Underground workings can hold oxygen-deficient or irrespirable air with no smell and no warning; roofs unsupported for a century fail without a sound; floors have shafts in them. Underground mine exploration is a specialist activity with its own training, equipment and rescue arrangements. Casual entry is not a smaller version of it.
Do not go alone. The realistic accident is a fall or a twisted ankle a mile from a road with no phone signal, and it changes character entirely depending on whether somebody else is there.
Do not dig into a tip face or undercut a slope. Work loose material at the toe of a tip. Removing support from the bottom of a steep pile of loose rock has one outcome.
Tell someone where you are going and when you will be back. Free, takes ten seconds, and it is the only thing on this list that works after something has already gone wrong.
Add to those the ordinary equipment: boots with ankle support, gloves, eye protection whenever a hammer is used, a hard hat anywhere near a face or a slope, and a charged phone in the knowledge that signal on an orefield is usually absent.
Permission, which is a separate question from safety
A site being physically accessible tells you nothing about whether you may collect there, and the two questions have different answers on the same ground more often than not.
Old mine sites are owned. The owner may be a private landowner, a company, a local authority, a conservation body, or a successor body holding former mining liabilities. Spoil is property. A public right of way across a site is a right to pass along the path, not a right to leave it, dig or remove material.
Access is not permission, and permission to walk is not permission to dig. Ask, ask the right person, and ask specifically — naming what you want to do, where, and whether you intend to remove anything. A verbal yes from someone who turns out not to be the owner protects nobody.
Then there is designation, which sits on top of ownership. Many former mine sites are Sites of Special Scientific Interest, frequently designated for the geological features that make them interesting to collectors in the first place. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, section 28P makes it an offence for a person who is not the owner or occupier to intentionally or recklessly destroy or damage the flora, fauna or geological or physiographical features by reason of which the site is of special scientific interest. Scheduled monuments, which many engine houses and dressing floors are, carry separate protection again.

Doing it properly, and the honest alternative
If you have permission and you are working surface spoil sensibly, the routine is short.
Before: find out what the site produced and what the geology implies about hazards, including whether asbestiform or uranium minerals are known there. Check the weather — spoil after heavy rain is a different proposition. Tell someone your plan.
On site: stay on established ground, work the toe of tips, keep out of anything that looks like a depression or a differently vegetated patch, and never turn your back on a face you have been digging.
Handling: gloves on, no eating, drinking or smoking, and do not put anything in a pocket that will later hold a phone or a sandwich. Bag specimens as you find them and label the bag then, not later, because a specimen without its locality is most of the way to being worthless — the same point our page on mineral labels makes about collections.
Afterwards: wash hands and face before eating, change out of and wash field clothing separately, and leave boots outside. Wash specimens outdoors, not in a kitchen sink, and check what you have found against toxic minerals in a collection before it goes into a drawer.
And the honest alternative, which deserves saying because most of the internet writing on this subject implies field collecting is the only real way to acquire specimens: the great majority of the finest material in collections was not self-collected. The classic British localities were largely worked out for specimens generations ago, and the material that circulates comes from old collections rather than out of the ground. If what you want is fine specimens from Cornwall, Weardale or the Caldbeck Fells, a day on a dump is a good day out and a poor acquisition strategy.
