Azurite

The deepest blue in mineralogy, and the species Tsumeb defined. Also the one most likely to be quietly altering to malachite in your cabinet.

Azurite is a copper carbonate, hardness 3½–4, and the deepest natural blue in mineralogy. Tsumeb in Namibia set the world standard; Milpillas in Mexico and Chessy in France follow. Azurite alters to green malachite over time, so specimens are kept out of light and damp — pseudomorphs of malachite after azurite are common and collectable in their own right.

It is changing while you own it

Azurite is metastable. Over years it converts to malachite, and the process runs faster in light and humidity. This is not damage in the usual sense — it is the mineral doing what it does — but it does mean a deep blue specimen will not stay that way forever in a sunny room.

Keep azurite in a drawer or a closed cabinet, out of direct sun, in stable dry conditions. It is one of the few species where storage genuinely changes the specimen rather than just its surroundings.

Pseudomorphs

When the conversion runs to completion you get malachite in the crystal shape of azurite — a pseudomorph. Far from being spoiled material, good azurite pseudomorphs are collected deliberately, and Tsumeb and Chessy produced fine ones.

Partial replacement, blue core with a green rind, is arguably the most attractive state of all and is priced accordingly.

Buying

Colour and lustre carry the price. Look for sharp terminations and unbruised edges; at hardness 3½ the crystal tips are the first thing to suffer in a drawer.

Tsumeb material is finite and labelled accordingly — ask for provenance on anything expensive, because the name alone lifts a price.
